What is a doula?

The role of a doula in birth and the postpartum period is not a new concept. Being in community during birth and the fourth trimester is as old as time, however, the term “doula” in the way we know it modernly is relatively new. The role of a doula is varied depending on who you are with. Traditionally, a doula is someone who provides physical, emotional, and mental support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Doulas provide information about labor and birth, comfort measures during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, and help to facilitate communication between you, your partner, and your birth team. We provide support for families before, during, and after birth, and are known to aid in a higher rate of satisfaction in the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience and lower rates of interventions during birth as well as lower rates of postpartum depression and anxiety.

People who use doulas report increased satisfaction in their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience, more success in their nursing journies, and easier recovery periods mentally, physically, and emotionally.
